Friday Fiction: The Wind in the Woods

I don’t normally go with the first idea that pops into my head, but this story practically wrote itself …

The Wind In The Woods

‘Freeze everybody! Someone’s coming!’ They all held their positions as a lone rambler approached.

Willow’s weekly Yoga For Trees classes were a huge success (she was even thinking about branching out), but they were going to have to find a more secluded spot. The constant human interruptions were an irritation.

A long, low, mournful creak broke the silence, followed by the pungent smell of rotting leaves and bark mulch. The rambler held her nose and hurried on her way.

‘I’m so sorry,’ Cherry said, her pink blossom darkening a couple of shades, ‘I just couldn’t hold it in any longer.’

  1. Branching out, eh? Your skills have not diminished while you were gone, El. I really enjoyed this. I’m trying really, really hard not to go into pun mode, so I’m going to leaf now before it gets bad.

  2. Haha this was funny! Love branching out and the idea that trees would pass wind, let alone do yoga! Trees do manage to grow into interesting yoga poses at times. Love your work.

  3. You’re right …. it HAD to have written itself. I laughed out loud you have a tendency to do that to me!). Reminds me of the Smothers Brothers who sang a madrigal song which ended, “Don’t you think, dearest maiden, you better agree, when there’s two in the bush, there’s a bird up your tree.” Sorry, but I HAD to. 😀
    Super-duper story!

  4. Dear E.L., Your writing is so spectacular! When the “pink lady” had to pass gas, I started laughing out loud. You are really a humorous writer! Good for you. I’m new (and old), but your story is fresh and clean. What enjoyment to read! Thanks, Nan 🙂

    • Thanks Nan, what a wonderful compliment. I love knowing that I’ve made someone laugh out loud. I giggled on the train as I wrote this, everyone probably thought I was mad. Perhaps I am…

  5. Dear EL,

I’ll never look at trees the same way. So if a tree farts in the woods…? Well, I guess you could say I’m stumped by this. 😉 Thanks for the giggles. Makes me realize how much I missed you.

    Shalom,
