And The Dish Ran Away…

Mint Sauce was the ring-leader. It was obvious when they named her that she was destined for the table, so she knew her days were numbered. She waited until Farmer Giles was engrossed in conversation, then nuzzled the gate open.

‘Rosemary! Garlic! All of you! Now’s our chance, let’s go!’

And, of course, the others all followed. Like sheep.

Freedom felt good, but what now?

‘We could go to Baaa-li,’ Gravy suggested.

‘What about Baaa-bados? We could baa-sk in the sun,’ bleated Chop.

‘Wherever we go,’ said Mint Sauce, shivering. ‘It’d better be warm. That baaa-stard shearer stole my coat.’

  1. I was really trying to find a way to work baaaaa-stard into mine. Good on you, darling! Farmer Giles, huh? I think I had a book as a child called Famer Glies and Ham or something like that…

    • Farmer Giles of Ham – it’s by Tolkien. What a well read child you were! I think Farmer Giles has just become a standard name for farmers now though. Ham is a real place, it’s near Sandwich in Kent (yes, really) 🙂

      • I thought it was Tolkien. Of course there’s also the pre-king Crimson album by Robert Fripp called the cheerful insanity of Giles Giles and Fripp (i’m also an audiophile in my spare time)

  4. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! “Mint Sauce” sounds like an old time cowboy star. Only here, I have never known a farmer to have a name like “Giles.” Hee-hee-hee!!! I laughed out loud, too. And … LOVING it! Great, EL!

    • Thanks Kent. Glad you liked ‘Mint Sauce’. Over here Farmer Giles is a pretty common sort of generic name for a farmer -not that I’ve actually met a farmer called Giles. I was being lazy with his name, but turns out it’s quite funny too – who’d have known!
thanks for your lovely comments 🙂

  5. Dear El, Great story and I am still laughing too. You were so clever in naming your sheep, but, poor, poor Mint Sauce is doomed. If I were her, I would change my name so no one get’s ideas. Such a good laugh – thanks, you made me happy! Nan 🙂

  6. El, I was having the same problem with WordPress a couple of weeks ago. I went to the Help section of the blog and typed in my problem in the box. I got a reply back and the problem was fixed. Others have said to check the Spam on your blog as other blogs, etc. sometimes get sent there. I found some of the blogs I subscribe to there and Bjorn found some of my comments there in his Spam. —Susan

  7. So funny!!! But really, Chop and Gravy should be shot for those suggestions. Hope Mint-Sauce leads her flock somewhere warm. (Still smiling. Am going to have to share this ….)
